In a recent podcast, Guillermo outlined how his company's AI-powered tool V0 is turning natural language into fully functional websites—and why this represents a fundamental shift from traditional coding to what he calls the "generative web."
From Frameworks to AI Agents
When ChatGPT launched, Guillermo noticed something remarkable: the AI was exceptionally good at writing React and Tailwind code, the building blocks most web developers use today. Rather than seeing this as a threat, Vercel dove in, creating v0—a text-to-app generator that has already attracted over 3 million users.
"Instead of perhaps the typical reaction would be like, you either ignore it or you're in fear of it. We really deeply embraced it," Guillermo explained. The tool doesn't just serve traditional developers—it's opening up web development to "dev adjacent" profiles like designers and marketers who can now create functional prototypes just by describing what they want.
The End of Traditional App Development
Guillermo's vision goes beyond just making coding easier. He predicts a future where apps are "ephemeral"—generated on demand rather than downloaded and installed. This aligns with Jensen Huang's famous prediction that "Every single pixel will soon be generated. Not rendered: generated."
The shift is already happening. Guillermo shared that ChatGPT has become one of Vercel's biggest customer acquisition channels, with people discovering the platform simply by asking AI assistants about the best way to deploy React applications. At a recent AI engineering conference, booth visitors told Vercel representatives they'd learned about the platform because ChatGPT recommended it.
Self-Healing Infrastructure
Beyond code generation, Vercel is building what Guillermo calls "autonomous infrastructure" that can diagnose and fix problems in real-time. The company's AI systems already prevent thousands of security vulnerabilities daily—catching issues like database secrets being accidentally shipped to client-side code.
This extends to performance optimization too. Guillermo described how AI agents can now handle the kind of detailed quality checks that previously required expert human review, from matching Safari theme colors to optimizing load times.
The Competitive Landscape
As companies like Figma and others race to build their own AI-powered development tools, Guillermo sees the market splitting into two categories: platforms for creating other platforms (traditional Vercel) and tools for creating individual apps (v0). He compared the ideal v0 experience to Waymo's self-driving cars—fully autonomous most of the time, with human intervention only when necessary.
What's Next
Looking ahead, Guillermo predicts the next three to five years will see "kingdoms collapse" as companies that can't adapt to AI-native development fall behind, while new AI-first companies rise to "unprecedented heights."
His advice for the AI era? Don't hold too many strongly held beliefs. "I encourage people to not have too many strongly held beliefs," he said. "Anytime people say, well, I can't do this, I try to be on the side of AI."
The transformation from static to dynamic to generative web is accelerating, and Vercel is positioning itself at the center of this shift—turning every person with a keyboard into a potential app creator.
